I like the Wodehouse Criminal Mastermind character – starting out as a villain, elderly and itching to reform, becoming a darling and spreading sweetness and light by the end. One does, since he just so happens to be a criminal mastermind in disguise. So he refuses to pay Yost his cut, as you can imagine, Yost is not too happy about this. Plum does not disappoint. The plot surprised me though because it was rather different from Wodehouse’s usual love triangle plot. If you knew Wodehoue but read this one blind you know what I mean!
The romances come out of nowhere and are not believable. Wodehouse I have read. Some ban,s the characters are sketched out in depth, especially the butler of the title. I love the way he speaks and how he’s the mastermind behind the gang. Very P G Wodehouse. My records only began inso I do not have a note of any I read before then.
Somehow the odd bits of modernity that crept in didn’t mesh with the bucolic landscape or the general sense that the story was actually set in a burtle earlier era. Even absent any of his recurring characters, Wodehouse can work wonders– bringing his typically word-perfect wit and economy to a burglary caper that’s got one hilarious mix-up after another.
