I quickly learned to find my way about the house, and got to know all the objects that surrounded me; it now ecbkert to me as though everything had always been the way it was; it no longer occurred to me that there was anything particularly strange about the old woman, that the house was fantastically situated and remote from other human dwellings, that there was anything even slightly out of the ordinary about a bird that could sing actual words.

No one but I was Walther, was Hugo. His murder of his friend unremittingly haunted him; he lived in a state of perpetual self-accusation.
Faint and bewildered, he heard the old woman speaking, the dog barking, and the bird repeating its song. I liked it was very entertaining! When Tom Service reviewed the chamber version of the opera for the Guardian, he felt that the virtues of Weir’s compact musical style and her ability to tell a story with the smallest of musical gestures are even more evident in the later version than in the original.
In eckbertt evening hours she taught me to read; I picked up this skill very readily, and it subsequently became an endless source of enjoyment for me in my solitude, for the old woman owned several books written a long, long time ago—books full of marvelous stories. It was a good way distant; he had wandered far into the woods. For, living in the plain country, I had never seen a hill; and the very word Mountains, when I heard talk of them, had been a sound of terror to my young ear.
If so, how stands this man connected with my destiny? I was required to spin thread, which I soon figured out how to do; in addition I had to look after the dog and the bird.
They are terribly afraid of Walther stealing their remaining fortune. After discovering the German word ‘Waldeinsamkeit’ and learning it was coined by Ludwig Tieck in this story, I sought it out and stored it away to read later.
Unperturbed by this mishap, he continued his journey on foot. No trivia or quizzes yet. Will he not perchance—for such is human nature—be seized by an unfortunate avaricious craving for our precious stones, and scheme and dissemble in the hope of acquiring them?
I felt as though I had just stepped out of hell and into paradise, and I no longer found my solitude and my helplessness frightening in the least.
For the rest, if I went through my duties, the old woman troubled herself little about what I thought or felt. My husband says you have so generous a mind, that it is not right in us to hide aught from you.

He wrestled with these imaginings throughout the night and eckgert very little sleep. From that day, Walther visited the castle of his friend but seldom; and when he did appear, it was rckbert to say a few unmeaning words and then depart.
The two were now frequently together; Hugo showed his friend all possible attentions; one scarcely ever went to ride without the other; in all companies they got together.
She folded her bony hands and said grace in a loud voice, all the while putting her face through its characteristic round of contortions, such that I once again could hardly refrain from laughing; but I took especial care to retain my composure for fear of making her angry. After doing so, however, Eckbert becomes insanely suspicious of his friend; Hugo then proceeds to take on, to Eckbert’s eyes, the features of Walther, and finally, after his journey through the forest and to the secluded hut, the features of the old woman as well.
Approaching insanity, Eckbert reels when the vengeful old woman reveals to him that Bertha was, in fact, his own sister. Much of the vocal writing consists of short phrases of speech song, written more to support the text than to be musically interesting in itself. Eckbert, on the other hand, reproached himself for such ignoble feelings to his worthy friend; yet still he could not cast them out.

I could not make up my mind whether or not to press on. But it seemed to be his doom that, in the very hour of confidence, he should always find materials for suspicion.
