The characters It’s always a little scary to read books that I loved when I was younger since my tastes now are so different.
In particular, in this novel, we are introduced to the humorous region of Lamorkand – a region where everyone lives for revenge. This book was written as part of a trilogy and while plenty happens in the book, nothing really is resolved by the end and the hero is given the knowledge that will launch into the next two books.

I think that it’s partially due to the fact that the characters are more familiar to the reader now, and the story becomes even more compelling as it advances. Beyond that, the characters have become members of my little mental family.
And there was a lot of humorous dialogue. Flute speaks and at the end reveals who she really is. Sparhawk is a great character, a battered knight, but his horse Faran is my favorite. David Eddings’ wife, Leigh Eddings, was an uncredited co-author on many of his early books, but he had later acknowledged that she contributed to them all. Sooo… As usual the book opens up with Sparhawk travelling through Cimmura at night in the fog.

There don’t seem to be any dvid of any importance to give depth or breadth to the story or the characters. Sparhawk, Sephrenia, Flute and davud allies seek to eddinggs Ehlana and their land. The novel itself describes it as “cruel, rigid, unforgiving and smugly self-righteous” by Sephrenia, a follower of a polytheistic competing religion, and the Elene religion never is more than that.
