Fear of running out of money. I would think any good writer must be able to do those things as requirements — but he has to go beyond that and maybe even have a point to the story. I actually find his overt symbolism and naked prose annoying and overrated. My kids were crazy, and my wife was crazy. Fear that what I love will prove lethal to those I love. No time for full development of the characters; limited opportunity for feeling, as a reader, that we can empathize with the main characters.
